St. Louis Park named one of 100 best communities for young people
St. Louis Park was named one of America's Promise Alliance's 100 Best Communities
for Young People presented by ING in September 2012. St. Louis Park is the only
community in Minnesota awarded the designation six times. The national award
recognized St. Louis Park for its innovative programs and services that create an
outstanding environment for youth to live, learn and grow.
The high school's positive efforts to keep youth in school were a key to the award, and
its College Possible program, which helps low-income high school students prepare for,
apply for, and receive admission to college is a component of that commitment to youth.
Dollars for Scholars Scholarships, provided by members of the community, demonstrate
the outstanding grass roots support St. Louis Park students receive.
"The increase we have seen in graduation rates over the past few years is due, in large
part, to the hard work communities such as St. Louis Park have done to make sure
their youth have access to an outstanding education and support services," said Rhonda
Mims, president of the ING Foundation and head of the ING U.S. Office of Corporate
Responsibility.
All-School Reunion unites and celebrates classes, teachers, staff
The All-School Reunion, held at the St. Louis Park High School on August 25, 2012,
brought together former students, families, faculty and friends for an afternoon of
connections and celebrations. Many of the attendees are proud members of classes that
sponsor Dollars for Scholars Scholarships in recognition of their St. Louis Park High
School years and the supportive St. Louis Park, Minnesota community. Tours were available of the
current Central/Park Spanish Immersion School, site of the former high school, and both
current and former teachers and counselors gathered to celebrate their past students'
successes. Sponsored by the St. Louis Park Public Schools Foundation, proceeds went
toward enriching academic programs.
